.NU Domain Launches Numeric Domain Names

Medfield, MA – Friday June 6, 2008 – .NU Domain – manager of the .nu top level domain name – will begin accepting registration of Numeric Domain Names on June 10, for the first time allowing registration of numbers-only .nu domain names – such as 247.nu, 123.nu and 3663.nu (the English word “food” on a phone keypad.)

Initial registration – the “Landrush” – for .NU Domain’s numbers-only domain names will start at 12:01 UTC on June 10, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Numeric Names Service will have two price-classes for numbers-only domain names:

A Premium Numeric Name consisting of just 3 characters (like 212.nu) and a Standard Numeric Name consisting of any combination of numbers and hyphens up to 63 characters long.

On June 10, customers can start applying to register numeric names using any of several authorized .NU domain name registrars throughout the world or at the .NU Domain Ltd website at www.nunames.nu.

“Demand for numbers-only domain names has really taken off in the past year across several top level domains,” said J. William Semich, CEO of .NU Domain. “We expect to see a lot of activity as customers compete to get the combination of numbers they want the most.”

In February, when SIDN, manager of the .NL top level domain in The Netherlands, first began accepting registration of numbers-only domain names, the rush of hopeful registrants almost shut down SIDN’s email-based registration servers. During the first day of open registration of numeric .nl domains (known as the “Landrush”), SIDN received 511,274 competing registrations for just 14,409 unique numeric .nl domain names during the first 24 hours of the Landrush period. See: http://www.sidn.nl.

The cost of .NU Domain’s newly available 3-character Premium Numeric domain names is 100 EU per year and the cost of registering a Standard Numeric .nu domain name for one year is 30 EU.

Names that are five numeric characters long, and certain other numeric names of high public or private interest, including 411.nu, 888.nu and others, will not be released for registration during the June 10 Landrush period. .NU Domain will make them available for registration at a later time.

Free News For .NU Domain Bloggers

Medfield, MA – June 15, 2005 -The .NU Domain Ltd today announced that its free blogging service now includes the capability for RSS-news feeds (Really Simple Syndication). With this new offering, .NU Domain customers can offer readers of their Blogs continuous alerts of any new Blog postings, available directly on their web browsers via an RSS-feed – all for free.

.NU Domain’s free blogging service and development tools allow customers to quickly and simply publish Blogs on the net (a Blog is a realtime journal or diary). With .NU Domain’s free blogging service, users can even use their cell phones to post to or read their Blogs from the road, using any e-mail client or their cell phone’s Web browser or WAP gateway.

“Rupert Murdoch was right when he said that people will no longer accept news packages being served up to them by a handful of ‘News Gods’. The news flow from Blogs is much more free and open and can bring you exactly the information you want from different sources,” said J. William Semich, founder and CEO of .NU Domain. Semich created the Internet’s first commercial daily news feed website, PlugIn Datamation, in 1994.

The .NU blog service with RSS is free for all users of .NU domain names. .NU domain also offers a stand-alone blogging service for a nominal cost of $15 per year including registration of a .NU domain name.

For existing holders of .NU domain names, the free blogging site is reached via a third level domain above the “Blogga.NU” domain. If the customer’s registered domain name is “heaven.nu”, for example, the customer’s .NU blog site can be found at “heaven.blogga.nu.” The free blogging service includes pre-built home page templates, password protection, image uploading (150k limit) and the possibility to design your own logo and html-templates.

.NU Domain was the first blogging service provider to offer moblogging, where blogs can be viewed and updated using a mobile phone. The free blogging service is available to .NU domain name holders for as long as their .NU domain name is active.

.NU Domain Streamlines Processes and Reduces Costs for Registrars

PRESS RELEASE

.NU Domain Streamlines Processes and Reduces Costs for Registrars

.NU Domain Leads the Way with Implementation of New Standard

MEDFIELD, MA, January 27, 2005 – .NU Domain is among the first Country-Code Top-Level Domains (ccTLDs) to offer its registrars the new standard Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP). The implementation of this standard provides registrars the ability to use a single interface for all TLD registries and streamlines integration processes, thus reducing registrars’ costs. The Internet organization ICANN, which oversees the Internet’s domain name system, now requires all generic top domains, such as .com, .net, .org, to adapt to EPP.

“EPP is a very important standard for the management of domain names as it eliminates manual routines. We believe we can cut our costs for domain names by 10 to 20 percent, which will also benefit .NU Domain customers,” said Sam Nurmi, CEO of Sweden’s third largest web hotel, Loopia, which has successfully tested .NU Domain’s new EPP interface. “Once again .NU Domain is leading the way with a technical solution that is years ahead of Nic-Se.”

Previously, there were no recognized standards for the systems that web page resellers and registrars use for their interaction with top level domain systems. The standards body, Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), finalized a new protocol, Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP) for top domains in March 2004. ICANN now requires all generic (non-geographic or country code) top level domains to adopt EPP. Generic top level domains .org, .info and .biz already have the protocol in use, while .com and .net have started to adapt.

“Although ICANN has not stipulated that the ccTLDS must adapt to EPP, the expected financial savings will drive the registrar’s demand for EPP adoption by all popular ccTLDs,” said, William, J. Semich, president of .NU Domain. “The ccTLD registries of Poland .PL and the Netherlands .NL are in the process of implementing EPP.”

EPP is defined on the IETF home page: http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3731.txt?number=3731
ICANN’s requirements for generic top-domains can be found on: http://www.icann.org/registries/agreements.htm

Niue’s WiFi Internet Survived Cyclone Heta; .NU Domain Calls on Customers to Send Aid

Niue’s WiFi Internet Survived Cyclone’s Devastation

.NU Domain Services, All Located in the US and Europe, Also Still Running Safely and Securely

MEDFIELD, MA, January 19, 2004 – .NU Domain Ltd. today announced the successful restoration of the devastated island of Niue’s Internet link and WiFi services. On January 5th, cyclone Heta, a category 5 cyclone with winds travelling at 300 kph, ripped through the island, destroying everything in its path, including the hospital, hotels, the island’s telecommunications antenna and numerous homes. All electricity and communications links were cut and fuel storage tanks were destroyed, leaving Niueans with no communication capabilities with the rest of the world until last weekend.

Staff of the island’s Internet Users Society (IUS-N), .NU Domain’s charitable foundation set up to maintain free Internet services for the people of Niue, have worked tirelessly to restore the country’s Internet infrastructure since the cyclone hit. IUS-N administrative manager Stafford Guest, who was in New Zealand during the storm, returned to Niue on the first flight available, with replacement equipment for the Internet services and WiFi services.

“Most of the equipment survived,” said IUS-N technical manager, Richard St. Clair. “That’s because we stored it all in a water-tight metal shipping container before the cyclone hit.”

“Some WiFi antennas were lost,” said Emani Lui, who originally installed and tuned the antennas for the WiFi service. “But many have now been repaired or replaced and are functioning normally. (see http://www.niue.nu for more information)

Portions of revenues derived from .NU domain name registrations have funded IUS-N’s activities in Niue since 1997, including development of the Internet infrastructure and training of local staff to manage Niue’s free national Internet link; funding and installation of the world’s only national free WiFi net; as well as paying for computers, text books and sports clothing for the island’s schools.

The cyclone in Niue caused no disruption in .NU Domain’s customers’ domain name servers, web sites and other technical services. .In order to avoid the risks associated with unpredictable and destructive storms of the South Pacific, .NU Domain has always operated its servers and operations in secure professionally managed sites in Europe and the United States.

“We knew it was critical that Niue’s communications infrastructure be rebuilt as quickly as possible. We are proud of the efforts of the team in Niue who have been working since the storm hit to restore Niue’s Internet link,” said J. William Semich, founder and CEO of .NU Domain. “In addition, we are committed to repairing or replacing any damaged or destroyed equipment that .NU Domain has donated to Niue”

.NU Domain is calling on its customers around the world to support the aid effort through the Red Cross’s Pacific Cyclone Relief web fund. “Niue needs help now, and we urge those who want to donate money to support the New Zealand Red Cross relief effort,” said Semich. The New Zealand Red Cross have been active on the island from the start and are delivering clothes, cooking equipment and first-aid kits for those that have been made homeless. The Red Cross Cyclone relief fund can be reached through the link www.redcross.org.nz.

.NU Domain’s International Characters Require No Software Upgrade or Browser Plug-In

MEDFIELD, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–March 14, 2003–The .NU Domain Ltd, today announced that it supports the International Domain Names (IDN) standard recently published by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). Since the year 2000, .NU Domain has supported local language characters for all known languages including Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, German, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Arabic Hebrew, Icelandic, and Cyrillic. Currently, thousands of customers around the world are using international characters in their .NU domain names (see examples at http://www.nunames.nu/local-language.cfm ).

Unlike VeriSign’s (Nasdaq:VRSN News ) recently announced system, which will not be available until late summer and which requires users to install a software plug-in web browser upgrade to access their international character .com domain names, accessing an international character .NU domain name is seamless and transparent to the user – no software or plug-ins need be installed.

“.NU Domain’s Multi-Lingual Web Address® service has been successfully up and running since July, 2000 and is currently being used by thousands of customers in Sweden and worldwide,” said J. William Semich, president and CEO of .NU Domain. “We have been at the forefront of implementing International domain names since the inception of our company. We believe that supporting the IETF requirements for multi-lingual characters in domain names is critical to expand Internet use to all the people of the world, not just the English speaking community.”

.NU Domain is compatible with all the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standards related to IDN. Following are three recently approved RFCs (Request for Comment) that relate to the standardized implementation of IDNs from the IETF:

-- IDNs in Applications (IDNA) RFC 3490 (published March 2003)
-- Name Preparation (nameprep) RFC 3492 (published March 2003)
-- Encoding Scheme (punycode) RFC 3491 (published March 2003)

First Country Code Domain Name Trademark Dispute To Be Administered By WIPO

First Country Code Domain Name Trademark Dispute To Be Administered By WIPO

Expedia, Inc. Requests Arbitration and Mediation for Expedia.nu with World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)

MEDFIELD, Mass., March 22, 2000 — .NU Domain Ltd (www.nunames.nu) announced today that the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Arbitration and Mediation Center is administering the first domain name dispute of a Country Code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) ever. The dispute involves the domain name expedia.nu, which has been registered with a company based in Stockholm, Sweden. Expedia, Inc., which owns the trademark for the word expedia, has challenged the Swedish based company’s registration of the domain name expedia.nu with .NU Domain Ltd.

“As a registrar of domain names for the international community, we believe it is critical for a neutral organization to mediate any trademark disputes,” said J. William Semich, president and founder of .NU Domain Ltd, one of the fastest growing domain names on the Internet. “The WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center is recognized internationally as a leading institution providing administrative services to facilitate the resolution of international intellectual property and commercial disputes.”

The WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center’s domain name dispute resolution services give effect to the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP), adopted by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) on August 26, 1999 and the Rules for Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy, approved by ICANN on October 24, 1999. The .NU Domain Ltd announced adoption of the UDRP for all .NU registrations in October of 1999 and recently retained the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center as one of its dispute resolution service providers.

“This case represents the first ccTLD domain name case filed with the Center,” said Francis Gurry, Director of the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center. “As country-code administrators, .NU Domain clearly understands the importance of the Policy for reducing intellectual property infringements in the country code-top level domains. We hope that others will follow their lead in supporting the UDRP.”

.NU Domain Announces Policy To Protect Customers’ Privacy

.NU Domain Announces Policy To Protect Customers’ Privacy

.NU Domain Privacy Policy Restricts Personal Info in Whois Database

Medfield, MA, October 25, 1999 – The .NU Domain Ltd (www.nunames.nu), one of the fastest growing Top Level Domain (TLD) names on the Internet, today announced its Privacy Policy, which protects the personal information of its customers by keeping the data on its Whois database, private. Whois is commonly used to search for domain names and determine if they are available to register or not.

“When the domain name registration systems were initially set up, domain name registrants were generally corporations or research and educational institutions,” said J. William Semich, President and Founder of .NU Domain Ltd. “Now millions of private individuals, and not companies, are registering the majority of domain names. And many of these users are under the age of 18. Policies need to be established to protect these individuals from spam, or from harassment and stalking, by anonymous people who gather personal information from publicly accessible Whois databases.”

Under .NU Domain’s Privacy Policy, only a domain name, its status and the date of its registration is made available via the .NU public Whois database at whois.nic.nu. Additional information about .NU Domain names – including technical contact information and a contact email address for the domain name holder – can still be obtained at the .NU registration site, using the .NU Domain’s registration database search engine. But this information can not be obtained in an anonymous manner, nor be scanned using automated Whois capture software.

.NU Domain’s private Whois data policies contrast to Network Solutions’ (NASDAQ: NSOL) Whois database, which makes all the personal and technical contact information about holders of .com, .org, .net and .edu publicly available. With Network Solutions’ Whois database, the domain name holder’s name, personal residence and telephone number is all publicly displayed. Other Registrars for .com, .net and .org also make this personal information available via their Whois database.

“We understand that there may be need for trademark holders or law enforcement agencies or other officials to access information regarding a domain name holder and we have established a policy for providing access when necessary,” continued Semich.

Under the .NU Domain Privacy Policy, if someone such as a law enforcement organization or a trademark attorney, needs contact information about a domain name holder, the person is required to submit a statement to .NU Domain Ltd identifying who they are, and why they need the information, before private information is provided to them. If they can not justify a valid need for this information, the information is withheld.

“We believe that anonymous persons should not be able to have open access to all information about anyone who has registered a .NU Domain name,” added Semich. “We have a requirement that all contact information about a domain name holder must be valid and verifiable. But by not protecting our customers’ privacy, we are making it difficult for many of them to comply.”

As an example, when a recent registrant for a .NU Domain name who registered the name for a Teen Rock and Roll Fan site provided unverifiable contact information for the name, it was deactivated and put on “hold” status while the customer was asked for valid information. The customer – a 15-year old teenager – declined to do so in order to protect her privacy. Expanding .NU Domain Picks Chief Operating Officer

.NU Continues Growth, with Nearly 50,000 .NU Web Addresses Now Registered

Medfield, MA, October 6, 1999 – The .NU Domain Ltd (www.nunames.nu), the fastest growing Top Level Domain (TLD) name on the Internet, announced today that operations expert Stephen Oronte has joined the company as chief operating officer (COO). Mr. Oronte’s charter will be to spearhead the branding effort of the .NU domain name and develop the corporate infrastructure and business practices within the .NU Domain organization to ensure .NU Domain’s success during its rapid growth.

.NU Domain Ltd, the only United States-based competitor to Network Solutions’ ‘.com’ (NASDAQ: NSOL) domain name, has registered nearly 50,000 domain names under the .NU TLD and plans to accelerate growth in its registration of .NU domain names through the year 2000 in its quest to become the second largest TLD in the world after .com.

“The extensive use of the .NU domain name around the world has spurred rapid growth for the .NU Domain Ltd, which makes it necessary for us to expand our management team,” said J. William Semich, president of .NU Domain. “Mr. Oronte’s comprehensive management experience and expertise in growing businesses will be pivotal as the .NU Domain Ltd advances into the new millennium.”

Mr. Oronte has nearly 20 years of business experience in systems and information technology, financial operations, manufacturing, consulting, sales marketing and retail management. He has owned, managed and grown businesses including E-I-E-I-O Inc., DKD Inc. and Ormast Inc. Mr. Oronte has overseen the successful installation of operational software systems, managed order fulfillment processes, customer service programs, and financial operations and has developed financial and sales reporting systems.

“There is a huge opportunity before us. Personal and small business Internet use is about to explode,” said Mr. Oronte. “And all of these users are going to be looking for a domain name for their web site or email address. Many folks have found that the common .com, from Network Solutions Inc., is just not an option for them anymore.” With over 6 million .com domain names already taken, most of the desirable names are gone. But you can still find the domain name you want in the .NU TLD and at a lower price than .com.
