Polynesian Premier Invites Swedish .NU Domain Vacation Winner to View the Last Sunset of 1999

Tiny Island-Nation of Niue, Just Miles from International Dateline in the South Pacific, is Last Place in the World to Usher Out the Millennium

ALOFI, NIUE, POLYNESIA and SHERBORN, MA, April 13, 1999 – Sani Lakatani, the Premier of the South Pacific island-nation of Niue, today announced that Mr. Patrik Algotsson of Sweden is the winner of the .NU Domain’s 1999 Polynesian Vacation Giveaway contest.  Mr. Algotsson registered sodrakarr.nu (http://www.sodrakarr.nu) as the web site for the Swedish floor ball team Södra Kärr.  Mr. Algotsson, who plays centerfield for the team and is co-owner of the Internet consulting firm Doberman Digital Agency in Karlskroma, Sweden, will receive a $10,000 ten-day expense-paid vacation for two in the Polynesian island of Niue (http://www.visit.nu).

Niue is the country associated with the two-letter “.NU” Top Level Domain (TLD), which is the fastest growing TLD in the world (http://www.nunames.nu).

Premier Lakatani invited Mr. Algotsson and a guest to schedule their free vacation to coincide with a NU Millennium New Year’s celebration in Niue.  “I’m inviting the winners to be one of only a few people in the world to see the last sunset of 1999,” he said.  Niue is only about 100 miles from the International Dateline, and will be virtually the last place on earth where the sun will set on the second Millennium, ushering in a NU Millennium with the year 2000.

The Polynesian Vacation Giveaway contest was jointly sponsored by .NU Domain Ltd, the only competitor to Network Solutions Inc.’s (NASDAQ NSOL) “.COM” Top Level Domain (TLD), and by the Internet Users Society – Niue (Internet Niue), the island nation’s nonprofit Internet Service Provider.

“Although Niue is one of the smallest nations in the world, it is also one of the worlds most beautiful scuba diving destinations, with miles of unspoiled coral and clear waters,” said Premier Lakatani, “and has excellent dolphin and whale watching opportunities.  The winners are in for an exciting experience.”

Premier Lakatani, who also serves as Minister of Tourism for Niue, said he expects the exposure given to Niue by the Polynesian Vacation Giveaway contest will help promote Niue as a preferred tropical vacation spot throughout the world.  “We don’t have millions of dollars to spend on promoting our wonderful island,” he said, “but we believe the increasing popularity and visibility of the .NU Domain name on the Internet will help tourists worldwide get to know us better.” During the contest period, .NU Domain Ltd purchased over 50 million banner ad impressions promoting the contest on leading Internet Web sites including AltaVista.com, GeoCities.com and Lycos.com

“The international response from this contest has been astonishing,” said J. William Semich, president and CEO of .NU Domain Ltd, the exclusive registry for the .NU domain name.  “We doubled our monthly registration rate during the event, and now have nearly 35,000 .NU domain names active on the Internet.”

“This successful contest has brought us another step forward in our goal to become the second largest TLD in the world,” he added.  .NU is already the third largest TLD in the Asia Pacific region, just behind Australia and Japan (http://www.domainstats.com/)

Mr. Algotsson receives an all-expense paid 10-day (9-nights) vacation trip for two to the island of Niue in the South Pacific, 1,200 miles northeast of New Zealand.  Mr. Algotsson and his guest will stay at the exclusive Matavai Resort in Niue, http://www.nunames.nu/visitniue/matavai.htm, and will be able to sample a wide range of exotic island foods, as well as spend days scuba diving (http://www.dive.nu), deep water fishing and exploring Niue’s coral caves and rain forests.

“I am thrilled about winning this fabulous vacation,” said Algotsson “The tranquility of the island combined with the water sports activities makes Niue a perfect place to vacation.” Algotsson created his web site for fans of the Södra Kärr floor ball team.  Fans can follow the team’s progress as well as monitor their matches online at http://www.sodrakarr.nu which broadcasts the matches play by play.  The English translation of the Södra Kärr’s Web site URL is “The South Swampers Now,” since the Swedish word “NU” means “NOW” in English.

Thousands of Swedish Web sites have started using the .NU Domain name in order to take advantage of that meaning.  “The .NU Domain name is becoming very popular in Sweden,” said Algotsson, “because it has a really cool meaning and stands out and gets noticed.  It’s much more interesting for a sports site or a small business like mine than using “.ORG” or “.COM.”

The 1999 Polynesian Vacation Giveaway winner was randomly selected from registrants of all currently active .NU Domains as well as thousands of entries received during the contest period, which ran from December 15, 1998 to March 31, 1999.  Users who either registered or renewed a .NU domain name at .NU Domain Ltd’s web site or through any .NU Domain Ltd registered partner were automatically qualified for the 1999 Polynesian Dream Vacation giveaway.  (See http://www.nunames.nu/contest/rules.htm for the contest rules)

Rising roughly 200 feet above the sea, partially covered with rain forest and dotted with caves and grottoes, the island of Niue is not only one of the world’s largest raised coral atolls, it’s one of the world’s smallest self-governing nations.  This tiny island, which sits in the South Pacific just south of Samoa and west of the Cook Islands, is known as “The Rock of Polynesia” by its regional neighbors and simply as “The Rock” by the 2,000 Niueans who live there.
